EXHIBITS

119 Gallery presents XFest 2010!
The second annual XFestival of improvised music, visuals and dance. The format of the festival is simple yet challenging: 15 visiting artists and 60 local artists perform. Friday and Saturday evenings each feature 10 half-hour sets that include a visiting artist and two or three local artists.

Artists include musicians, visual artists and movement artists. Every set is an improvisation; the artists are playing together for the first time.

What is improvisation?

"Improvisation can give us the skills to deal with many of the social and aesthetic issues of the twenty-first century. Although we have become adept at talking about aesthetic hybridity, cultural alerity, crossing borders (both earthly and cyber), and global fusion, few of us have really studied what physical and intellectual practice will make our bodies and minds ready for this brave new world... Improvisation can lead us out of our habitual responses by opening up alternative experiences - new physical sensations and appetites... Although this practice begins with an attentiveness to corporeal experience, it also develops a mental flexibility that can provide a sort of intellectual map with which to chart new pathways for negotiating awkward and difficult crossings." --- Ann Cooper Albright in Taken By Surprise

Circuit Bending Workshop

Squawk-a-Doodle Workshop!

Noise artist Crank Sturgeon instructs this workshop on how to build a Squawk-a-Doodle, which is a simple tone generator using an ordinary speaker cone and 9 volt battery. Also known as a "Victorian Synthesizer", the class delves into building a lo-fi noise instrument using a 19th Century technological approach. For all experience levels, the workshop will also teach proper soldering techniques; and everyone will get to take home their very own!
