"At Home In Utopia" Screens TONIGHT in Lowell

"At Home in Utopia" | A film by Michal Goldman
Free admission!

What does it take to get housing that's good for our children? What does it take to build a community where we want to live? Does it take a movement? During the 1920s, thousands of immigrant factory workers managed to build cooperative apartment houses that they owned and ran themselves. When they were hit by the Great Depression, they fought alongside others to win the social safety net that we are now in danger of losing. "At Home in Utopia" tells their story. Presented in partnership with UMass Lowell, Lowell National Historical Park, and the Lowell Film Collaborative, with support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Join an informative post-film discussion with the following guest panelists:
Michal Goldman, Filmmaker

Bob Forrant, Professor/UMass Lowell Regional Economics and Social Development
Lindolfo Carballo, Community Action to Support Affordability (CASA)

Thur., Nov. 19, 6:30pm (Refreshments), 7pm (Screening)

'Surface Design' sounds so industrial. Somehow it doesn't conjure up the complex relationship between our sensations and our imaginations. The textures, colors, even smells of certain fabrics speak directly to our memories and fantasies. Joanne Scanlan Hart, Julie Lupien Nussbaum, Mary Walter and Stanley Pinckney, the artists of the New England Fiber Collective, use fabric and dyes to capture the images enveloped in this flood of emotions.

SLAM! BAM! BOOM!

Centro Bar & Restaurant, 24 Market Street
October 12 through the holidays
Reception: Sun., Nov. 22 from 1-3 pm

'SLAM! BAM! BOOM!' Art Reception featuring Action Abstraction paintings by David LeBlanc.
From the artist:
"The explosion of the primary colors of the old three-color press and gentle criss-crossing painterly drips in my Action Abstract paintings delve into the essential questions of the use of color, composition and balance of abstract expressionism over pure content and representational painting. Simultaneously, I integrate tangible elements of pop art (numbers, prices, etc.) through images from Action Comics covers featuring Superman from the 1930's-1950's. The "under-painting" of these canvases include photographs, drawings, words and numbers from comic books or representative of those that would be found on those covers that serve as structural anchors within the work. What are produced are spontaneous, layered pictures of acrylic and acrylic latex enamel paint combined with collage generating varied textures and depth within each painting. The combination gives my canvases depth and pop."
