Doors Open Lowell 2010

The ninth annual Doors Open Lowell, presented as part of Lowell's National Preservation Month activities, will take place May 13-15.

The event offers an insider's look into the preservation nearly thirty of Lowell's fabulous historic buildings, many not normally open to the public. It's a celebration of urban living and culture where people and preservation have made Lowell a creative and exciting place to live, work, and visit.

Thurs., May 13: Kick-off event!
Join the Lowell National Historical Park and the Lowell Heritage Partnership in recognizing recipients of cultural heritage and historic preservation awards as well as the opening of a new exhibit on the history of historic preservation in New England and Lowell sponsored by Historic New England. The Revolving Museum will host their fourth community arts event at Harmony Park!

Festivities will include games and crafts, dance and music performances by local artists and food by local vendors. Celebrate spring with your neighbors at this afternoon block party on the first day of May! Native Americans & Julia Child are explored in LNHP events

Whatever Happened to Julia Child's Kitchen?
It's not every day that someone's kitchen becomes a museum exhibit. Julia Child'skitchen - the cabinets, appliances, utensils, pots, and pans - all left Cambridge and found a new home at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. The exhibit remains popular with visitors since it opened in 2002. To explore the kitchen's journey to the Smithsonian, join us for a talk by Dr. Rayna Green, folklorist and Smithsonian's curator of Julia Child's kitchen. She will also touch upon the French Chef's impact on the home cook in the 1960s and 70s through her cookbooks and her legendary television show produced by Boston's PBS station, WGBH. Free admission!

Strange Snow at The Old Court Pub

"Strange Snow" became the major motion picture "Jack Knife," starring: Robert DeNiro, Ed Harris and Kathy Baker.

The Chelmsford Cultural Council has put out a call to artists for illustrations to be part of a new illustrated edition of a poem entitled, "Chelmsford," by Tom Ryan. The details of the 'Call to Artists' and a link to the poem can be found on the Cultural Council's website at http://www.chelmsfordculturalcouncil.com. The entries will also be part of an exhibit at the Chelmsford Library in November.

The ninth annual Doors Open Lowell,
presented as part of Lowell's National Preservation Month activities, will take place May 13 - 15, 2010.  The event offers an insider's look into the preservation nearly thirty of Lowell's fabulous historic buildings, many not normally open to the public.  It's a celebration of urban living and culture where people and preservation have made Lowell a creative
and exciting place to live, work, and visit.  In 2002, Lowell was the first city in the United States to launch this prestigious event dedicated to preservation, architecture, and design.   
Buildings will be open Friday May 14 (6:00 PM - 9:00 PM) and Saturday May 15 (11:00 AM - 6:00 PM).   Look for old favorites this year such as well as exciting new additions to the roster of participating buildings.  Don't miss Doors Open XTRAs where you can enhance your Doors Open experience through interaction with design professionals and other special activities.  Check the event's website www.doorsopenlowell.org for full event information and regular updates.  Doors Open Lowell is presented by the Lowell Historic Board, Lowell National Historical Park, Lowell Heritage Partnership, City of Lowell, Greater Merrimack Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Cultural Organization of Lowell (COOL).

C I TY MANAGER'S SUMMIT SERIES SPRING 2010 START UP YOU SPOKE AND WE LISTENED.  Cobblestone finish work has begun which includes the completion of the handicapped ramps and crosswalks at the intersections shown on the map. Final paving and crosswalk work will also be done at Market/Central/Prescott before the end of May. Any need for detours will be communicated in advance. Parking will be minimally impacted this year with a goal of the least impact possible. All parking will be restored when work is complete.
