Lush Beads April 2010 Newsletter

* First Saturdays Open Studios this weekend from 12-5PM
* Chronicle appearance!
* REMINDER - Ugly Necklace Contest II!
* May Day events at Lush Beads and Western Avenue Studios

-----

First Saturdays is upon us again! Join us this Saturday, April 3rd,
from noon to 5PM. It would be a great outing for you and the family,
especially if you have out-of-town visitors for Easter or Passover.
The weather forecast looks great, so please join us.

-----

In some -very- exciting news, the Western Avenue Studios will be
featured in an upcoming episode of Chronicle. While I was not
interviewed, some footage was shot in my studio so you may see your
favorite bead store on Chronicle! The show will air "in a few weeks".
When I have an air date, I will let you know! Chronicle is shown
on WCVB channel 5.

Today's Lowell Sun features an article regarding the filming:
http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_14791554

And here are some behind-the-scenes photos taken by some of our
resident photographers:
http://gse.uml.edu/rtt/chronicle/

2 pics of me in it.

-----

Reminder - The submission deadline for the Ugly Necklace Contest II is
in just under a month, on April 28th. I hope you are all working hard
on your entries. Should the Chronicle piece air before May open
studios, we will have a HUGE crowd to view and vote on these pieces!

Submission deadline: Wednesday April 28, 2010
Judging by artists & the public: Saturday May 1, 2010
Winners announced: Saturday May 1, 2010 at 5PM

Rules & Submission Forms: http://lushbeads.com/uglynecklace.php

-----

And now we are six. :-)

On Saturday, May 1st, Lush Beads will have its annual anniversary sale
and celebration. We will have our famous "pick a chip" sale, giving
you anywhere from a 10-50% discount on your purchase. There will be
cake and refreshments at 1PM. We will also have a guessing contest,
and the winner will receive beads! And of course, there is the Ugly
Necklace contest voting happening just outside our door.

May 1st will also be the Spring Art Thing, where 30+ artists at
Western Ave celebrate Moms, Dads, and Grads! Collect hole punches
from participating studios to enter to win a gift certificate. The
more hole punches you get, the larger the gift certificate you can
enter to win!

Please spend your May Day with us at Western Ave!

UMass Lowell Emerita Jean Pyle

Monday, April 12China Blue
6:30PM
Middlesex Community College Federal Building Assembly Room
50 Kearney Square, Lowell
Free admission!

Shot clandestinely at a blue-jeans factory in southern China, '"China Blue'" reveals what international retail companies don't want us to see: how the clothes we buy are actually made. Discover the striking parallels of these compelling stories to Lowell in the days of its boarding houses and 'mill girls'. Co-sponsored by Middlesex Community College Cultural Connections, UMass Lowell Department of Regional Economic and Social Development, and the Lowell Film Collaborative.

Please join us for a reception and post-film discussion with guest speaker Jean Pyle.

Co-sponsored by UMass Lowell, Lowell Parks & Conservation Trust, Lowell National Historical Park, and the Lowell Film Collaborative.

131 Middlesex Street, Lowell
Admission: $5

Enjoy delicious dinner and beverages before, during, or after the film!

Don't miss our first event at Garcia Brogan's restaurant in the Hamilton Canal District! Still a bit of a controversial picture (and more renowned in Mexico than in the U.S.), "One Man's Hero" tells the little-known story of the "St. Patrick's Brigade" or "San Patricios," a group of Irish immigrants in the U.S. Army who deserted to Mexico after encountering religious and ethnic prejudice during the Mexican-American War. Co-sponsored by the Irish Cultural Committee, St. Patrick's Church, Garcia Brogan's, and the Lowell Film Collaborative.

EVENTS
Crank Sturgeon
Thu April 1, 8pm - 11pm
Crank Sturgeon, Qfwfq Duo, Trachypithecene Entity
Sturgeon has been active in the noise and performance art since 1992. He has giddily blurred the lines of quasi-art lecture/presentation with a circus of high volume, irreverent pun, and punk sensibility. Come see the show! guaranteed to be fun and interesting.

Strotter Inst + Baker/Bisson Duo
Fri April 2, 8pm - 11pm
After more than ten years of making music with turntables, tapes and loops the swiss based musician, artist, performer and architect Christoph Hess started in 1998 the project Strotter Inst. to concentrate just on the manipulation of turntables not using any records or sounds made by someone or something else. Live, Strotter Inst. is generating dense sound- and rhythmstructures by using five modified and manipulated lenco-turntables and various cut or scotched records. The music ranges from a low-fi rumble changing into concrete clicks and scrapes, followed by epic drones and multilayered broken beats to fall back into tricky bass-meditations.

"This trio of in-the-moment composers is a perfect setting for Robertson's aggressive extended techniques and forceful horn manipulations...Kaczorowski and Valosin are strong promoters of forward motion and creativity, two qualities needed when running with a beast like the fabulous Robertson."
