Historian Elizabeth DeWolfe tells the story of textile operative Mary Bean whose 1849 death captivated New England in newspapers and sensational fiction. In a story featuring aliases, disreputable doctors and a cross dresser, Bean’s murder revealed growing fear that wage-earning mill girls were not only in danger, but themselves were a threat to society.
