American history is a pageant of significant events that shaped our country-some of which mean as much to us today as they did in their own time. The 1858 debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas represent a dramatic and ongoing dialogue about the American experience. UMass Lowell is proud to be presenting this critically acclaimed play by Norman Corwin based on these historic moments, as the first major cultural event at the new UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center in downtown Lowell. Kevin Cullen of the Boston Globe called The Rivalry an important piece of history, if only because it reminds us that as much as Lincoln and Douglas were rivals, they were Americans." Corwin "turns history into compelling theater," wrote The New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal described the play as "powerful. Performances of The Rivalry are scheduled for Thur. Oct. 29 at 10:30am and 7pm at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center, 50 Warren Street. Admission is free, but reservations are suggested. To reserve seats, contact Barbara_Nolan@uml.edu or call the UMass Lowell Center for Arts & Ideas at 978-934-4450
