Lincoln-Douglas Debates Explored in "The Rivalry"
UMass Lowell presents FREE performances of the acclaimed Lincoln-Douglas debates play The Rivalry by Norman Corwin

American history is a pageant of significant events that shaped our country-some of which mean as much to us today as they did in their own time. The 1858 debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas represent a dramatic and ongoing dialogue about the American experience. UMass Lowell is proud to be presenting this critically acclaimed play by Norman Corwin based on these historic moments, as the first major cultural event at the new UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center in downtown Lowell.

Kevin Cullen of the Boston Globe called The Rivalry an important piece of history, if only because it reminds us that as much as Lincoln and Douglas were rivals, they were Americans." Corwin "turns history into compelling theater," wrote The New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal described the play as "powerful.

Performances of The Rivalry are scheduled for Thur. Oct. 29 at 10:30am and 7pm at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center, 50 Warren Street.

Admission is free, but reservations are suggested. To reserve seats, contact Barbara_Nolan@uml.edu or call the UMass Lowell Center for Arts & Ideas at 978-934-4450

THE SEAFARER
FINAL TWO WEEKS!
Must End NOVEMBER 8

A mysterious stranger visits four friends for a Christmas Eve poker game in The Seafarer, a play by leading Irish playwright Conor McPherson.

The Seafarer currently is one of the Top 10 most produced plays in America. Nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Play, The Seafarer is a hilarious and chilling tale of the sea, Ireland and redemption. James "Sharky" Harkin has returned home to care for his aging brother Richard, who has recently gone blind, and to spend Christmas Eve with old friends Ivan and Nicky. Nicky is accompanied by the mysterious Mr. Lockhart, whose connection to Sharky's past is slowly revealed as the evening devolves into an all night, liquor-soaked game of poker with damningly high stakes.
